After a long night of cinder and smoke, spice and sauce, Butcher BBQ of Chandler, Oklahoma took home the title of grand champion and $2,000 from the fourth annual Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt BBQ.
David Bouska took home the grand championship out of 47 cooks who competed in up to five categories during the cook-off.
“We got lucky,” Bouska said.  This was the third time Butcher BBQ has entered the Enid cook-off, which is sanctioned by the Kansas City Barbecue Society.
This is Bouska’s third grand championship win this season and only one of many he’ll compete in this year.
“We’ll probably do 20 this year,” said last year’s reserve champion.
With 47 cooks coming from New Mexico, Texas, Kansas and from around Oklahoma, it was the largest Roberts Ranch Smokin’ Red Dirt BBQ competition.
“This is a great event,” Bouska said. “Everybody loves coming in and they take real good care of us.” His advice for those soon-to-be competitive cooks is start with the most basic of ingredients. “Start with your meat,” he said. “You can’t get fillet mignons out of chuck roast.”
Butcher BBQ took first place in the brisket category and second place in the pork category.
Scot Kee of team Little Pig Town, of Owasso, took home the reserve championship and $1,000 prize and also took second place in the brisket category.
